The Fortnightly Children's Playgroup | University of Missouri-Columbia

About Us

Our group is composed of mothers who work at or are affilated with the University of Missouri-Columbia. This group was started in order to help new moms find the information they need regarding education, health, nutrition, etc. Our group meets every other Tuesday at times that alternate between 10:00 and 2:00 in order to accommodate varying nap schedules. Field trips are scheduled approximately monthly, usually on Fridays.

During the summer months, we meet at a different park each week, always at 10:00 in order to avoid the most intense heat of the day.

During the academic year, most playgroups are held at the Kraatz home (901 Audubon Drive in Columbia; 573-441-9945)

The playgroup was established in order to:

  • Provide and opportunity for preschool aged (0-5 years) children of Fortnightly members to play with one another in a safe and supervised environment.
  • Provide Fortnightly members who are parents of preschool age children with a forum to meet other mothers of young children in order to exchange mutual support, information, and encouragement in a social setting.
  • Extend support to Fortnighntly members who are pregnant or who are new parents, as well as to women in the university community with (or expecting) preschool age children who might be prospective members of Fortnightly.
  • In addition to the activities relevant to the group's three main purposes, the preschool playgroup is also involved in community service activities as is appropriate within the umbrella of the larger Fortnightly Society. During the group's inaugural year (2005/2006) we collected donations of baby and children's equipment for Rainbow House (a shelter for abused women and their children) and donated two baskets (one for infants, one for toddlers) that were auctioned very successfully at Fortnightly's Scholarship Fundraising Gala.

Click here for directions from Stadium Drive:

Go east on Stadium toward Highway 63. Turn left/north at the last intersection before you get to Hwy 63 - you will be on Audubon Drive (there is a Greek Orthodox Church on the northeast corner of this intersection and if you turned right instead you'd be going toward the movie theater). Go straight down Audubon Drive, past Shepard School on your right, through a stop sign, across Shepard Boulevard, down a small hill. Our house is the last house on the left - a tan brick with a carriage house facing the turnoff to Peppertree Lane. After our house the street turns back on itself and takes on a different name (Randy Lane) so if you find yourself heading back in the direction you came from, you know that you've gone too far.
